Word

Save Directly to the Original File, No Download

The feature that overwrites the original file with your edits, and when it is available

So copies do not pile up in your Downloads folder

Normally, pressing "Download" creates a new file in your Downloads folder. Edit the same document a few times and files with similar names pile up. "Update original" instead writes back to the file you first opened, in the same place.

How to use it, in order

  1. Open the document by **dragging and dropping** the file onto the home screen. Documents opened with the "Choose file" button do not get this feature — save those with Download.
  2. Make your edits.
  3. Press "Update original". A preparation screen appears briefly (about 5 seconds on the free plan). When it finishes, press "Overwrite original".
  4. The browser asks once whether it may write to that file. If you allow it, it is saved.

If you do not see the button

Documents taken out of your storage do not have this button. They are copies kept on this device or in the cloud, so there is no original location to write back to. Also, this feature only works if the browser supports "writing directly to your files from the web". In practice only desktop Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, etc.) do. In Firefox, Safari and Chrome on Android, the button does not appear at all.

Even without the button, "Download" works in every browser. You are not losing the feature — there is just one fewer way to save.

It never overwrites automatically. It only saves when you press the button — so that nobody’s file is changed without a word.
