Open a DOCX File Without Word — Free, No Install

When you need to open a document on a computer that has no Word

You can open .docx without Word

A .docx file looks like a Microsoft Word–only format, but it is actually a published, zipped document format. So you do not need Word installed — any tool that can read the format will open it. This site does that reading inside your browser.

While a Word document (.docx) is being opened, the file is not uploaded to a server. Your browser reads the file directly, draws the pages on screen, and editing happens right there. There are four cases in which the file goes to the server — when you choose to keep the document in the cloud, when you convert its format (Word↔PDF), when you open a format that **has to be converted to open**, such as PowerPoint or Excel, and when you press **"Arrange pages"** on a Word document. All four are actions you choose yourself, and the screen tells you before you choose. If the file must not leave your hands — an internal document or a contract, say — do not use these four.

How to open it

  1. Choose the .docx file on the home screen.
  2. A short analysis that skims the document runs first. If there are parts of this document that are hard to handle, it tells you in advance. If your device is busy and the analysis does not finish in time, it says so and lets you open the file anyway — in that case it cannot warn you in advance.
  3. On the analysis result screen, open it as is, or, if the document is large, choose "Quick open".
  4. When you are done editing, press "Download" to get it back as a .docx.

"Quick open" opens the document without measuring the fonts. The screen appears faster, but line breaks and page breaks may differ from the original.

When it opens but looks different

If the text and formatting are intact and only the places where lines wrap are different, it is usually a font issue. When a font the original used is not on this computer, a similar font replaces it, the character widths change, and the line breaks shift. The article on page breaks covers this in detail.
