The key is to leave the template alone
A downloaded résumé template is usually built from tables and fixed formatting. All you need to change is the text inside the cells; if you delete cells or make new ones, lines shift out of place and are hard to put back.
How to edit it, in order
- Make a copy of the original file and open the copy.
- Select and change only the text inside the cells. Do not delete or add cells.
- If you need to remove a whole line, delete only the text and leave the empty line. Deleting the line itself pulls the formatting below it up.
- When you are done, get the .docx with "Download". If you need a PDF to submit, open the downloaded file and save it as PDF from the print dialog.
Check the format the employer asks for first. If they want .docx and you send a PDF, it may be rejected even if the formatting is right.
When you want to reopen a document you were working on
If you keep the document on this device, you can take it out of the list again even after closing and reopening the browser. You choose the storage location yourself — this device or the cloud; signing in does not change the location by itself. A document kept on this device exists only inside that browser; a document kept in the cloud is stored on our server and opens on other devices too.
