Does It Autosave? When Edits Are Kept

When autosave runs and when it does not

Only when you are signed in

If you are signed in, your edits are kept in the cloud even without downloading. If you are not signed in, nothing is kept automatically — closing the window loses it, so be sure to press "Download".

When it saves

  1. It saves about 4 seconds after you stop typing. It does not save while you are typing — the screen pauses briefly while saving.
  2. There is at least 1 minute between saves. So while you keep typing without a break, no save happens — you need to lift your hands once in a while for it to be kept.
  3. When a save finishes, the time it was saved is shown at the top of the screen.

Copies do not pile up with each save. The same document is overwritten each time.

You are told when it stops

If you are signed out or a save fails, a notice appears on screen. It is built not to switch off silently. If you see that notice, your edits are still on screen, so save them yourself with Download.

Once stopped, it does not turn itself back on. If you were signed out, or if saving fails three times in a row, autosave stops completely — so that it does not keep hammering at a failing save and shipping the document over and over. In that case, secure your work with Download first. To turn it back on, check that you are signed in and reload the page — whether autosave is on is decided once, when the screen opens.
